Dental Implants

Dental implant stages

You’re finally going to do it: you’re going to tell your dentist to extract that painful tooth that has been bothering you endlessly. You can’t wait until all that constant and excruciating pain finally ends. But then you suddenly get nervous: what am I going to do about this new gaping hole in my mouth where the tooth used to be? How will I chew? Will I look ridiculous with this open space between my other teeth? Is there any solution?

Thankfully, modern dentistry has evolved enough to produce two solutions to those patients who have lost their teeth. The first is fabricating dentures (fake removable prostheses). While dentures have many benefits, they’re harder to maintain, become loose over time and are usually made when patients lose many teeth (rather than only 1 or 2). The other innovation is an implant. Now I’m sure you’ve heard of implants countless times, but what exactly are they? Implants are essentially tiny screws that are embedded in one’s bone (in the exact location of the extracted tooth).

After the dentist extracts the tooth, bone is placed in the resulting hole to prepare the area for the implant. Once the area has healed nicely and shows no signs of infection, the dentist will place the implant in the very same spot as the extracted tooth and then allow for what’s called osseointegration (the formation of strong intimate contact between the implant and the surrounding bone tissue). Once the osseointegration is complete, the dentist can screw a crown over the implant and just like that you have a brand new tooth!

Now you’re probably wondering why go through the hassle of all these steps just to get a new tooth? What are the benefits of implants? Can’t I just put a crown over the empty space without an implant?

The first main advantage of implants is that they are very durable. Unlike removable dentures, implants are embedded into one’s bone and (given successful osseointegration) should last a long time. Furthermore, implants are more convenient than dentures: they don’t need to be cleaned or the use of any adhesives to keep them in place. Additionally, implants act as a strong anchorage device for the eventual crown that will be screwed on top.

As for the need for implants, patient’s have found their lives to be more fulfilling and at ease once they get implants to replace their missing teeth. Implants improve one’s speech and allow for better chewing of food. Implants also remove any unsightly or embarrassing empty spaces in mouths. In sum, implants improve patients’ self-esteem.
