Do I really need that filling?

Dental filling

We all know that cavities are bad news. But what exactly are they, and how can we prevent them?

Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth that produce acid, which attacks the tooth enamel. The enamel starts to break down, and a small hole (or cavity) forms. If the cavity is not treated, it will continue to get bigger and can eventually cause pain or even tooth loss.

So, how can you prevent cavities?

The best way is to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. You should also avoid sugary foods and drinks, as well as tobacco products. If you do get a cavity, your dentist will likely recommend a filling. Fillings are made of materials like gold, silver, or composite resin, and they help to restore the tooth to its original shape.

What are some signs that you need a filling?

- dark spots on your teeth

- a whole in your tooth that you can see or feel with your tongue

- sensitivity to sweets, or sensitivity to hot and or cold food or beverages

- a chipped, rough or broken tooth

- a lost or broken filling

- when your floss breaks or tears in a certain spot

So, do you really need that filling?

If your dentist says so, then the answer is probably yes! Fillings may not be fun, but they can save your teeth from further damage and destruction. So take care of your teeth, and they’ll take care of you!
