I have sore gums, now what?

Gum disease vs healthy gums

In many cases, sore gums will heal by themselves if you maintain proper oral hygiene, which includes brushing your teeth in the morning and evenings and flossing.  Sore gums can be a result of hormonal changes which include pregnancy and menopause. Other causes of sore gums include brushing too hard or not brushing your teeth at all. Uncomfortable or sore gums can also be a result of canker sores. However, if you encounter additional symptoms appearing alongside the sore gums, or if the problem persists for more than a few days, it is always best to seek a dentist's help.

Sore gums can indicate a much bigger problem: the start of periodontal disease which is sometimes referred to as gum disease. If you have pain while chewing or your teeth are loose, it could also indicate the presence of gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can spread to other teeth and result in tooth loss. It is best to see your dentist regularly for check ups and cleanings in order to prevent gum disease in the first place.

When coming for a check up at Shine DDS, the staff at Shine DDS will take the appropriate xrays and Dr. Shine will evaluate your gums for gum disease whether or not you have sore gums. Oftentimes the start of gum disease is asymptomatic and can be detected during a routine dental exam. Gum disease can be treated much easier when detected at an early stage.
