Routine Dental Visits

clean teeth

It is not secret that good dental hygiene is important for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Not only does it keep your smile looking its best, but regular brushing and flossing can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. But sometimes even the most diligent brushers and flossers need a little extra help. That's where dental exams, x-rays, and cleanings come in.

Dental exams are an important part of preventive care. During a dental exam, your dentist will check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems. X-rays may also be taken to check for problems that cannot be seen with the naked eye. A  dental cleaning will be performed to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.

But what exactly is dental hygiene? Simply put, it's the practice of keeping your teeth and mouth clean. This means brushing and flossing regularly, as well as getting regular checkups and cleaning from your dentist.

Good dental hygiene starts at home with daily brushing and flossing. Be sure to use a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride helps to strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to cavities.

Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Be sure to brush gently, using circular motions. Don't forget to floss! Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, where your toothbrush can't reach.

In addition to daily brushing and flossing, it's also important to see your dentist regularly. During a routine exam, your dentist will check for cavities and other oral health problems followed by a dental cleaning, which help remove plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Neglecting routine check up and cleanings and result in gum disease, also known and periodontal disease.

X-rays may also be taken during a routine exam. These help your dentist spot problems that can't be seen with the naked eye, such as tooth decay beneath the surface of the tooth.

Cleaning your teeth regularly is important, but it's only part of the picture when it comes to good dental hygiene. Prevention is also key. That's why it's important to eat a healthy diet, avoid sugary drinks and snacks, and quit smoking if you smoke. These lifestyle choices can help reduce your risk for cavities and other oral health problems.

So don't neglect your dental hygeine. Be sure to schedule regular dental exams, xrays and cleanings. Click here to schedule your next dental exam and cleaning appointment at Shine DDS, in Brooklyn NY. Or give us a call at 718-751-0101
