What is teeth Whitening?
The day has finally come. That big date with your childhood crush that you’ve been looking forward to for arguably your entire life. You made the oh so difficult reservation at one of the fanciest restaurants. You picked the perfect outfit. You got that stylish haircut. Before you head out, you stop in front of the mirror for a quick check of yourself. And then you notice it: what was once your prized pearly white teeth are now discolored, tainted and outright grotesque.
Teeth staining can be broadly divided into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic staining. Intrinsic staining is more permanent and is staining below the surface of the tooth. It can be caused by oral injury, tooth developmental disorders, the use of certain types of medications (such as tetracycline), or overexposure to fluoride. Extrinsic staining, on the other hand, is a superficial type of staining that affects the outermost layer of teeth, also known as the enamel. It is often caused by excessive consumption of coffee, tea, wine, tobacco products or cola. While traditional whitening methods may not clear any intrinsic stains (be on the lookout for our future veneer blog post), they can fortunately be used to eliminate any extrinsic stains.
There are numerous types of tooth whitening options on the market. Whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives that may provide stain removal effectiveness. However, these products at best may only lighten one’s teeth by about one shade, in contrast to prescription strength whitening conducted by the staff at Shine DDS which can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter.
Over-the-counter whitening strips are low-strength peroxide-based products and an alternative option to treat extrinsic stains. The gels are applied with a small brush to the surface of your teeth while the thinly coated peroxide-based strips are also directly placed on one’s teeth. Unfortunately, these products must be continually used daily for several weeks and final results are not visible until months later.
In-office tooth whitening has proven to be the tried-and-true method of removing extrinsic stains. Dental clinicians apply one to two layers of a higher strength whitening gel on the patient’s teeth in conjunction with heat, a special light or laser. After a quick 30–60-minute time frame, this painless technique will instantly yield dramatic results.
Patients leave Shine DDS satisfied with their newly defined set of teeth and are eager to show off their bright new smile to all their friends and family.
