What are the different types of dental fillings?

Types of fillings

Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, are made from a mixture of metals including mercury, silver, tin, and copper. They have been used for centuries and are still commonly used today because they are strong and durable, withstaining the force of chewing. The dark color of silver fillings make them more noticeable when you smile and therefore less desirable. SIlver filings also expand and contract more than other types of fillings which increases the risk of cracks and tooth fracture. Additionally, some people are allergic to the metals contained in silver, amalgam, fillings.

Composite fillings, also known as white fillings, or dental bondings depending on their location, are made from a mixture of glass or quartz filler and plastic resin. They can be matched to the color of your tooth so they are virtually invisible. Composite fillings are also less likely to cause tooth sensitivity than amalgam fillings. Composite fillings offer good support because they are chemically bonded to teeth using a blue light. Composite fillings however stain more easily than other types of fillings so if they are placed on a front tooth, they may need to be replaced more frequently.

Porcelain or ceramic fillings are usually manufactured in a lab and therefore take two visits to complete. Like composite fillings, porcelain fillings are designed to match the color of your teeth. Unlike composite fillings, porcelain fillings are resistant to staining. Porcelain is more brittle than composite and therefore these fillings are durable and last longer than conventional composite or amalgam fillings. They are usually manufactured in a lab and therefore take two dental visits to complete.

Another type of dental filling is made from gold. Although gold fillings can last many years, they are not commonly used. Gold fillings are very strong and durable, but they are also very expensive. They are generally used in back teeth because they are visible when you smile. When comparing all of the different types of fillings, the chemical makeup of gold is closest to that of natural tooth structure making it the best option because it prevents wear or breakdown of the opposing tooth.

No matter what type of dental filling you choose, it’s important to have regular dental checkups to prevent cavities and keep your smile looking its best.
